Here are my answers to a fun seasonal tag about reading and books, created on Twitter by @JennieLy.
I was tagged by Shannon T Mc Gee (thanks Shannon!). This is my first time being tagged like this, so I hope I’ll do it right!!
Now let’s jump into it. Have you ever…
-
Received an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) and not reviewed it – NO
I don’t do many ARC, and those I do I care about, so no I’ve never not followed through.
-
Have less than 60% rating on Netgalley – ?
No idea what Netgalley is. I will go and check it out as soon as I finish this post!
-
Rated a book on Goodreads and promised a full review on your blog, but never followed through – NO
I don’t do reviews on my blog yet. If I did promise, I would do it even if it was ages later.
-
Folded down the pages of a book – Oh YES!
That’s my normal way of marking my page. My view is that books are not people, folding them don’t hurt them! Also I don’t mind a book that looks read and well loved.
-
Accidently spilt something on a book – YES
Coffee, tea, juice, bathwater… the lot. I find it very upsetting though! I don’t mind folded pages but I hate the crinkled wet page look (and feel). I distinctly remember having to finish 700 pages of a Jilly Cooper novel with soaked through pages while camping! Not nice.
-
DNF (Did Not Finish) a book this year – YES
I don’t consider myself bound to finish a book. I’ll only read if and as long as I like it. When I get bored, I stop. Too many other books to try, I’m not wasting my time on something I don’t enjoy. I only finish 50% of the books I start, I would say.
-
Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it – NO
If I buy it, I try it but it might quickly find itself in the DNF pile!
-
Read while you’re supposed to do something else – YES
Oh my goodness, yes. Absolutely. Everyday.
-
Skim-read a book – YES
Yes, quite often. When I’m a bit bored but still interested in the overall story, I will skim read, skip pages or chapters, or even sometimes go straight to the end and read the last paragraph. If I like the end, I might go back and read the middle.
-
Completely missed your Goodreads goals – YES
The first year I set myself a challenge was a disaster! I hadn’t realised that writing full-time was going to drastically reduce my reading time (duh!). I missed my goal by 50-ish books!
-
Borrowed a book and never returned it – YES
Many times. Especially if I like it and may want to read it again. I conveniently assume that if the lender wants it back they will ask. (They never do, so lucky me!)
-
Broke a book-buying ban – NO
I’ve never set myself a book ban! I have banned myself from my local library though, because the fines for late return do add up. In some cases, I might as well have bought the books! So in fact, the answer to that question is that I have banned myself from not buying books!!
-
Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about – NO
I always review books immediately after finishing them because otherwise, I would definitely forget what I meant to say. My brain’s a sieve these days!
-
Wrote in a book you were reading – YES
Not in fiction books, but in non-fiction, yes. Particularly in books about writing. I get my colour pencils out and go to town!
-
Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads – YES
I’m not religious about Goodreads so yes, very possibly, but I have now forgotten all about it! See comment above: my brain is a sieve.
VERDICT
More naughty than nice!! It turns out that where books are concerned I no longer live by the rules of polite company! But my love affair with reading is still going strong. So if you happen to bump into Santa, please do tell him I’m expecting my sack of books – or else!
With love
